India's capital Wakes Up to Hazardous Pollution Following Celebrations
Tuesday brought citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered inhaling dangerously toxic air that fell into the "critical" range.
Alarming Pollution Measurements
Several parts of the city recorded an air quality index above 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the safe threshold recommended by the global health authority.
In some locations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of 1,800, amounting to 15 to 20 times above acceptable levels.
Fireworks Ban and New Policy Shifts
Beginning in 2020, officials had enforced a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the deadly smog that engulfs the capital as colder weather sets in.
Yet earlier this year, the current local leadership petitioned the highest court to request a relaxation of the prohibition.
Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously doubted by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a compromise between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".
Court Verdict and Enforcement
To the disappointment of medical and ecological advocates, judges approved the appeal, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during designated time windows throughout the festival.
Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable violation of the regulated periods across the city, with little monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly type.
Numerous air quality sensors throughout the capital recorded air quality spiking around midnight to extremely hazardous measurements observed during the festival in at least recent memory.
Cross-Border Consequences
The proliferation of pyrotechnics during Diwali also initiated a dispute with adjacent the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab province partially attributing declining pollution levels in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles coming from neighboring India following the events.
Chronic Environmental Crisis
Alarmingly severe concentrations of atmospheric toxins in the capital have continued as a significant problem for more than 15 years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.
During Diwali, the amount of hazardous particles in the atmosphere has been documented to shoot up to significantly exceeding the worst records ever documented in China's capital, which was previously considered as the globally most contaminated city.
Various Pollution Sources
This crisis in Delhi is resulting from a combination of different contributors including transportation pollution, dust, construction activities, waste incineration and haze from agricultural fires in nearby areas of farming communities.
In these regions, farmers regularly burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, generating hazardous smog that remains stagnant over the city as winter air arrives.
Medical and Financial Impact
Both financial and medical consequences on the approximately 33 million people residing in the capital region is significant, according to numerous investigations.
This pollution results in increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and lung disorders, and can even lead to oncological diseases.
The pollution is projected to be responsible for approximately 10k early mortalities annually in the capital.
